the female de-miners of Sudan
My first reaction on reading this was, “Typical! Of course, women’s lives are more expendable, less valuable, easier to risk.” I was reminded of the women of Burma, who used to walk a foot behind their husbands as a sign of submission. Years after conflict, they now walk a foot in front of their husbands. Not from any progress in gender equality or societal norms, but because they’ll be the first to encounter any unexploded mines.
